Alstom has exercised the second option with Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. to supply the necessary propulsion components for 435 additional new subway cars for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s New York City Transit (NYCT).

The subway cars, known formally as the R211 series, are set to be introduced in an effort to both modernise and improve reliability for NYCT services.

Once delivered, more than 80% of the NYCT fleet will be fitted with Alstom’s propulsion system.

With the exercise of this second option, more than 80% of the New York City Transit fleet will be equipped with Alstom’s propulsion system, helping trains keep millions of passengers moving to their destinations.

The propulsion system for the new units is set to be manufactured at Alstom’s Hornell facility, the largest passenger rail manufacturing site in the US. The site in New York also handles production of AC traction motors, traction cases, high speed circuit breakers (HSCB) and incorporates an on-site combined test/power laboratory.
