Alstom has installed a new photovoltaic panel system at its 500,000 m2 manufacturing site in Ciudad Sahagún, Mexico, its third largest production plant in the world.

The 1,080 new photovoltaic panels offer a production capacity of 583 kWh and are expected to generate roughly 1,200 MWh of energy per annum, amounting to around 16.8% of the site’s total energy consumption.

The panels are expected to produce around 1,220 MWh of energy per year or 16.8% of the site’s total energy consumption

Covering an area of more than 15,000 m2, the system is expected to provide an alternative to both the rising cost of electricity and the volatility of the energy market.

The new Sahagún photovoltaic panel centre represents an important milestone for our Mexican operations, as well as for Alstom’s commitment to building a more sustainable and competitive future for our industry. Our priority is to achieve truly green mobility.

Whilst the installation marks the company’s first installation use of the technology on any of its existing production facilities in the Americas, Alstom has previously installed photovoltaic panels at 12 of its sites internationally.

The project was developed as part of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) which will see Spanish company Iberdrola heading its operation for 20 years.
