Power Conversion

Railways require a significant amount of energy to power vehicles and infrastructure, and rail operators seek to improve energy efficiency, reduce the environmental impact of their networks, and optimise lifecycle costs. Power conversion is playing an increasingly important role in addressing these challenges.

Leveraging decades of expertise in power electronics, we develop a comprehensive range of power conversion solutions, including rectifiers, inverters and fully reversible converters. By converting and managing electrical energy efficiently, these technologies help maximise the long-term operational performance and sustainability of rail electrification systems.

A key application is regenerative energy recovery: instead of dissipating braking energy as heat, our converters either feed it back into the power grid, or store and reuse it to power other vehicles within the traction network. By implementing our IGBT inverter system, the Agra Metro (in India) achieved annual energy savings of approximately ₹5 million with a payback period of less than five years. This demonstrates the tangible value of our approach and sets a strong example for other metro projects across India and around the world.

We also support the reduction of diesel usage by contributing to the deployment of battery-powered trains through high-power charging converters that efficiently transform grid power into the energy required for recharging during scheduled station stops. In Denmark, our rail charging converter architecture is already enabling battery-electric trains to operate on non-electrified lines, offering a cost-effective alternative to full network electrification while supporting the transition towards cleaner regional rail transport.

AC Electrification

Complementing our railway electrification offering, we cover all key equipment applied in AC distribution. We deliver tailor-made solutions based on modular concepts and standard products, integrating vacuum circuit breaker technology, earthing switches, measuring transformers, etc. Our equipment is engineered and produced in accordance with proven design principles and acceptance standards.

As a long-lasting leader in manufacturing AC vacuum circuit breakers for rolling stock applications, we also offer products for the electrification of AC systems – from outdoor railway solutions with our ORS vacuum circuit breaker and our SKID-mounted switchgear, supported by extensive factory testing and ensuring high reliability and performance – to our indoor and environmentally friendly (SF6-free) air-insulated metal-clad switchgear MCS, intended to feed the overhead line and usually placed trackside, in a substation or in a container.
