The US Department of Transportation has announced a 466 million USD investment in upgrading Washington Union Station.

The funding was confirmed on 28 May 2026 by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy during an event in Washington, DC. The investment will support structural repairs across the station and improvements to passenger-facing facilities, including the main concourse, the Amtrak lounge, and ticketing areas.

The programme also includes upgrades to security systems and changes intended to improve accessibility for families.

Furthermore, the upgrade of Washington Union Station will include redevelopment work linked to commercial space, including retail areas, parking facilities, office space and digital signage, as part of wider efforts to increase revenue generated from the site.

The funding forms part of the Northeast Railroad Partnership Programme, which is intended to support modernisation work at major rail infrastructure in the region.

The works will address a range of maintenance issues, including roof replacement and repairs to parts of the station structure and parking facilities. Efforts will focus on maintaining the historic character of the building while improving operational performance.
