A new passenger rail manufacturing facility operated by Siemens Mobility has opened in Lexington, North Carolina.

The site represents an investment of approximately 220 million USD and is expected to contribute an estimated 1.6 billion USD to the state’s economy by 2038. The facility will manufacture passenger rail vehicles for intercity and regional services.

The project reflects ongoing efforts to expand domestic transport manufacturing and support rail infrastructure. The facility will contribute to the supply of new rolling stock for services, including those operated by Amtrak.

Deputy U.S. Transportation Secretary Steve Bradbury said:

Siemens Mobility’s investment in North Carolina manufacturing underscores the importance of rebuilding America’s transportation infrastructure here at home. The impact of this facility will be felt for decades, supporting passenger rail services like Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and helping deliver modern, reliable trains for travellers nationwide.

The plant currently employs around 300 workers, with staffing expected to increase to more than 500 by 2028. According to Siemens Mobility, production will involve components sourced from over 75 suppliers based in North Carolina.

The facility will produce passenger coaches for Amtrak’s Airo fleet, which is intended to operate across 17 states on the East Coast and in the Pacific Northwest. Initial deliveries of the new coaches are scheduled to begin later this year.

David Fink, Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, said:

Siemens Mobility’s investment is a clear signal of industry confidence in this President’s ability to clear hurdles that held American manufacturing back under the last administration. These spectacular American-made coach vehicles will not only reshore American jobs but also help bring about the Golden Age of Rail Travel.
