SYSTRA Denmark has been awarded a new contract for Copenhagen metro operator Metroselskabet’s M4 line.

To date, SYSTRA has been involved in the construction of all metro lines built in the Danish capital.

Metro line M4 is set to be extended to the north following its previous extension to the south in June 2024, and will serve new residential areas built in a former port activity area.

SYSTRA will provide an advisory role to Metroselskabet, particularly on land and regulatory issues, alongside the Danish consulting firm Vanovis.

Thomas Vesterholm, Director of Rail and Metro, SYSTRA Denmark, said:

We are pleased to continue our successful collaboration with Metroselskabet, and to contribute with Vanovis to the creation of the best solutions for a collective and sustainable infrastructure in Copenhagen.

The extension, which is expected have a carbon footprint reduction of 50% when compared to the existing line, is projected to reduce car traffic around the areas served by the metro by 14% – further contributing to sustainability efforts.

Current projections expect the extension to open in 2030, with travel times for those living near new stations Ydre Nordhavn – Levantkaj and Nordsø Plads intended to take roughly 7 minutes to directly access the city centre and multimodal transport hubs; 14 minutes to reach Copenhagen Central Station and 27 minutes to reach the international airport.
