Alstom has completed both the delivery and commission of the ERTMS on the Iron Ore Line (known locally as Malmbanan), a key rail line for Swedish freight transport.

The system’s implementation marks the first deployment of the system outside of the country’s ERTMS pilot lines.

The existing system’s modernisation was carried out in partnership with Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration), and was carried out in two stages: the first through an intermediate upgrade using ATC and the second through a full transition to ERTMS – which is now in operation in the control areas of Linaälv, Gällivare, Kiruna and, most recently, part of Björkliden.

The project included overall system design, development, supply of equipment, testing, commissioning, and training, with the solution primarily developed by Alstom engineering teams based in both Stockholm and Hässleholm.

This delivery was possible thanks to our local presence with deep knowledge in signalling systems and operations conditions in Sweden.

The digital signalling solution utilised on Malmbanan incorporates Onvia Control for ERTMS and Onvia Lock for interlocking, both of which have been tailored to meet specific operational needs of the railway.

Both the existing legacy ATC and new signalling system are managed through the company’s Onvia Vistion traffic management platform, with the unified environment streamlining the overall transition.
