San Francisco Advances Muni Metro Train Control Upgrade Yurtdışı Haberleri by railsistem - Haziran 12, 20250 The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has launched the next phase of its Train Control Upgrade Project (TCUP), aimed at overhauling the train signalling and control systems across the Muni Metro network. The project will introduce a communications-based train control (CBTC) system, which uses continuous, real-time data exchange between trains and a central control centre. This technology, provided by Hitachi Rail, will allow for more accurate train spacing and operational flexibility across both underground and surface segments of the 71-mile network. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has selected the WSP-PGH Wong Joint Venture (JV) to provide program management support to modernize the city’s Muni Metro system © APTA The upgraded system is expected to support more frequent and reliable services, with projected capacity improvements of up to 20 percent. By improving traffic management and reducing disruptions caused by outdated signalling infrastructure, the project seeks to enhance the daily experience for Muni Metro passengers. To support the project, SFMTA has engaged a joint venture between WSP and PGH Wong to provide programme management expertise. Their role spans the full project lifecycle, from early-stage planning to post-implementation support. Local firm PGH Wong brings experience in engineering and architecture, while WSP contributes international transit systems knowledge. Dan Howard, TCUP project manager at SFMTA said: The Train Control Upgrade Project represents a five-generation leap forward in the technology we use to manage Muni Metro service. I’m especially proud of how intentionally we’re working to better manage risk to a degree we’ve never done before. Our partnership with WSP-PGH Wong Joint Venture will add their vital modern train control knowledge to help us see through blind spots and navigate challenges. Hitachi Rail GTS USA will deliver the CBTC technology, which will be implemented in phases. Passenger services using the new system are currently expected to begin between 2028 and 2034. The Train Control Upgrade Project is part of SFMTA’s broader efforts to improve network performance and respond to growing transit demand across San Francisco.
