THE overhaul of the RPSI’s GM single cab Class 121 No. 134 by Iarnród Éireann-Irish Rail is making rapid progress at Inchicore, as the old body platework is stripped back in readiness for replacement.

The RPSI’s project manager Gerry Mooney describes the overhaul as “the biggest diesel restoration ever undertaken in Ireland”, and it is clear to see why. 

Having totally rebuilt parts such as the bogies and traction motors, work has now turned to No. 134’s superstructure. 

The structural skeleton is being retained, but virtually all of the old platework is being renewed. The cab has already been pared back to the frame alone, and will see the centre window returned to its original as-built size.
