The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has completed testing and commissioning activities for a new digital signalling system on the Ashmont branch of the Red Line.

This milestone marks progress in the modernisation of one of the network’s busiest transit corridors. It forms part of a broader programme aimed at upgrading train control infrastructure and improving operational reliability.

This work took place during the recent service suspensions between Broadway and Ashmont on the Red Line and between Ashmont and Mattapan on the Mattapan Line

The digital signal system is designed to replace ageing signalling technology with modern train control equipment. The upgrade is expected to support more reliable operations and improve the long-term performance of the line.

Phillip Eng, Interim Secretary of Transportation and General Manager of the MBTA, said:

I’m proud of the MBTA for completing another major step in modernising the Red Line, which leads to improved reliability for all of our riders. I want to thank our crews for their work and to our riders for their patience while these valuable signal, track, and power upgrades were completed.

Alongside the signal system work, the MBTA carried out infrastructure improvements intended to support the overall resilience of the network. These included track and tamping works between Savin Hill and Fields Corner, resulting in the removal of a speed restriction that had been in place since August 2025.

Power infrastructure upgrades were also completed at the Codman Yard Facility, which supplies electricity to the Mattapan Line. Additional maintenance activities included bridge and retaining wall inspections, accessibility improvements, and preparatory works associated with future upgrades to the Mattapan corridor.
