Alstom has announced receipt of a five-year contract extension to both operate and maintain Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)’s Innovia automated people mover (APM).

Valued at approximately 140 million EUR (160 million USD); the agreement sets to continue a partnership that dates back to the initial debut of the airport’s Plane Train in 1980.

Alstom currently operates the Plane Train 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and in 2025; the system set an all-time record by transporting 95 million passengers.

Running along a 2.8-mile-long underground tunnel; the Plane Train connects all of the airport’s concourses and terminals. At present, Alstom is engaged in two capital projects at ATL; including the improvement of the system’s infrastructure and the supply of 63 Innovia APM R vehicles to augment and refresh the airport’s fleet.

The new contract extension takes effect upon signing, and includes two 1-year options. The agreement will see Alstom cover 24/7 operation of the APMs; power and electrification; maintenance of vehicles and guideway; and the cleaning of the tunnel, platforms and other facilities.
