Hitachi Rail has been contracted by Hassan Allam Construction and Arab Contractors JV to provide modernisation and upgrade work on the Alexandria Raml Tram.

Works will include the doubling of the tramway’s operational speed and almost tripling its overall capacity.

Hitachi will also provide signalling and communications systems, Operational Control Center and Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition – SCADA, security systems with CCTV cameras and Access Control, Passenger Information and On-Board equipment.

The oldest tramline across the Middle East and Africa; the work by Hitachi will bring the Alexandria Raml Tram line up to modern standards, delivering on a key aspect of Egypt’s Vision 2030 targets of sustainable operations.

In total; the project encompasses the reconstruction of 24 stations and 13.2km of tram track, with the modernisation work set to improve services by reducing travel time from 60 to 35 minutes, doubling operational speed from 11km/h to 21km/h.

Once complete, the upgrade is expected to increase passenger capacity from 4,700 to 13,800 per hour in each direction.
