Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has announced the phased modernisation of its existing Railjet fleet, which has been in operation for over 15 years.

The refurbishment project will cover all 60 train sets currently in service, with completion planned by the end of 2031.

The programme aims to upgrade the trains’ interiors and on-board technology in line with the standards of ÖBB’s latest generation Railjets.

The first fully modernised train is scheduled to enter service on the southern route in December 2025, coinciding with the launch of the Koralmbahn.

ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä said:

The upgrade of our Railjets is an important step in modernising the existing fleet and adapting it to the standards of the new generation Railjets. The first upgraded Railjet will make its debut on the southern route with the opening of the Koralmbahn in December 2025.

Key updates include new seating across all classes, redesigned in a modern wood finish with full-length seatbacks to offer more privacy.

The upgraded trains will also feature new footrests, improved folding tables, grab handles, and revised floor coverings.

In addition, they will be equipped with modernised passenger information systems, updated areas for prams, and vending machines for drinks and snacks.

Alongside improving comfort for passengers, the upgrade will support staff with new crew compartments and improved working conditions.

Following refurbishment, the Railjets will continue to operate across international routes connecting Austria with Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Italy.
