At Inchicore Works in Dublin, Alstom has unveiled the first train in Irish Rail’s order for 185 new electric and battery-electric carriages for the DART+ fleet.

Invited guests previewed the five-carriage train, which will improve capacity, accessibility, and customer experience across the Greater Dublin Area from 2026.

The ordered carriages form part of a framework agreement for up to 750 units over ten years.

Funded by the National Transport Authority under Project Ireland 2040, the fleet aims to double capacity and expand electrification on the network.

Initial deployment will focus on the Drogheda-Dublin route, with recharging infrastructure deployed at Drogheda station.

Key features of the new trains include:

• Low-floor doors with automatic retractable steps for improved access
• Spacious interiors with wide gangways and dedicated spaces for wheelchair users, families, and cyclists
• Advanced passenger information systems and on-board CCTV for safety

The fleet’s battery-electric trains will store energy for non-electrified routes, recharging via fast charging and regenerative braking.

Each five-carriage unit has a capacity of 551 passengers, with provisions for standing, seating, wheelchairs, and bicycles.

Testing and commissioning will begin immediately, with regular deliveries of additional carriages to follow.
