Transport for London (TfL) and Tokyo Metro have marked their longstanding relationship with the unveiling of a TfL-inspired roundel at Ueno Station in Tokyo.

The roundel was unveiled by TfL Commissioner Andy Lord, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and Tokyo Metro President Akihiro Kosaka during TfL’s visit to the Japanese capital.

The installation recognises the historical links between London’s transport network and the development of Tokyo’s metro system. The connection dates back more than a century to the visit of Noritsugu Hayakawa, who travelled to London to study its transport operations before helping to establish Japan’s first subway.

Hayakawa’s observations of the London Underground played a role in shaping the development of Tokyo’s underground railway network, which is approaching its centenary in 2027.

The roundel, one of the most recognisable symbols associated with London’s transport system, is expected to be displayed permanently at Ueno Station.

Andy Lord, Commissioner of Transport for London, said:

Our iconic roundel is recognised around the world and is a symbol of safety and service that all Londoners trust. We look forward to visitors to Ueno subway station being able to see it permanently from next year as both metros continue to serve the millions of people who rely on them each day.

The unveiling aims to highlight the continued relationship between the two metro operators as they prepare for the 100th anniversary of Tokyo’s subway network in 2027.

The event formed part of a wider visit to Japan by London representatives and reflected the ongoing exchange of knowledge and experience between transport organisations in both countries.
