Alstom to Maintain SJ’s Swedish Night Train Fleet

Alstom has been awarded a two-year contract to provide maintenance services for SJ’s night train fleet in Sweden following a procurement by the Swedish Transport Administration.

The agreement covers the maintenance of 87 rail vehicles, comprising 12 locomotives and 75 passenger carriages operating primarily on the Stockholm–Umeå and Stockholm–Narvik routes. Alstom said the contract is valued at tens of millions of euros.

Maintenance work will be centred at Alstom’s facilities in Luleå, with additional support provided from sites in Umeå and Kiruna. Around 60 employees are currently involved in maintaining rolling stock across the three locations.

The night train fleet includes sleeper coaches and locomotives of varying ages, requiring maintenance of both mechanical systems and onboard passenger facilities.

The contract will draw on Alstom’s FlexCare Perform maintenance services, including lifecycle support, component replacement, refurbishment and measures to address equipment obsolescence.

Mikael Granberg, Services Director for Alstom Sweden and Finland, said:

Reliable night train services depend on more than maintenance—they require strong local presence, long-term asset expertise and continuous investment. This contract reinforces our role as a trusted partner for Sweden’s rail network while strengthening the capabilities needed for the future of night train travel. It also highlights the growing importance of lifecycle services in delivering sustainable long-distance mobility.

The contract also supports Alstom’s ongoing investment in maintenance facilities in northern Sweden. The company intends to continue developing depot capabilities in the region to support both existing fleets and future rail services.

Sweden’s overnight rail network provides long-distance connections between the country’s northern and southern regions and offers an alternative to domestic air travel and long-distance road journeys. The Stockholm–Narvik route also provides access to destinations in northern Sweden and the Arctic region.
