Alstom has announced the acquisition of hydrogen fuel cell activities for rail from Cummins, including engineering, product development and support capabilities used in its hydrogen-powered train fleets.

The move is intended to strengthen its ability to support existing operations and complete ongoing development programmes linked to hydrogen traction technology.

Danny Di Perna, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Alstom, said:

We want to remain closely aligned with our customers’ operational needs and provide the support they expect as they move toward greener traction solutions.

Hydrogen-powered trains are being developed as an alternative for rail networks where full electrification is not considered cost-effective. While battery technology has progressed in recent years, hydrogen systems continue to be used for longer-distance routes and lines without overhead power infrastructure.

By integrating the fuel cell capabilities into its own operations, Alstom aims to manage development processes directly and support the reliability and maintenance of its current fleet. The acquisition will also contribute to meeting contractual obligations in markets including Germany, Italy and France.
