UK: 500 Passengers Apply to Trial New GPS-Based Ticketing

East Midlands Railway (EMR) and Transport UK have urged travellers to take part in a new digital ticketing trial utilising GPS-based technology.

The trial, which has already seen 500 passengers apply to take part, will see new technology utilised to track journeys via mobile phone, automatically charging what is considered by the app to be the best-value fare without the need to purchase a ticket.

Backed by Department for Transport (DfT) funding; the initiative is part of a wider effort across the country to both simplify & modernise rail travel.

The trial involves journeys between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham and will run until August 2026.

Simon Pready, Commercial Director at East Midlands Railway, said:

We have had a great reaction to the launch of the trial, with more than 500 customers currently taking part and benefiting from a new, seamless way to travel.

Digital Pay As You Go is all about making train travel easier, faster and more intuitive. No more fare confusion – just check in and out with your phone and know you’ll automatically pay the best-value fare for your journey. There is still time to sign up, so please register for one of the remaining places via our website.
