A fleet of 27 new, 4,200-horsepower Dual Charger Siemens Charger locomotives have now begun entering operation on Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line.

Received for testing last year by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the SC42-DM locomotives provide 1,000 more horsepower over the current fleet of GE P32s, and are capable of travelling the entire 102 miles of Metro-North’s third rail territory extending to Croton-Harmon on the Hudson Line, Southeast on the Harlem Line and Pelham on the New Haven Line.

Each new locomotive is compliant with Tier IV of the US Enviromental Protection Agency’s vehicle emission standards, improving both emissions and noise pollution rates in densely populated areas across New York.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, said:

Transit is already the antidote to climate change, and it’s only getting cleaner and greener as we replace Metro-North’s aging diesel fleet with top-of-the-line diesel-electric locomotives.

These are just the first of many new trains to come as part of the MTA Capital Plan’s $11 billion investment in new rolling stock.

The new Siemens Mobility locomotives were initially ordered by the MTA in 2021 and operate on both diesel-electric and third-rail electric power, allowing them to run on all of Metro-North’s non-electrified lines as well as switch to electric power for electrified routes, including those in Grand Central Terminal.

Manufacturing duties for the locomotives has been handled by Siemens Mobility at its rolling stock facility in Sacramento, California. Deliveries are set to continue through 2027.
