Class 37 Legacy Alstom Locomotive D6700 Displayed at The Greatest Gathering

From 1-3 August, Alstom is opening the doors to its Derby Litchurch Lane rolling stock factory to display both historic and modern trains at The Greatest Gathering.

The event is part of the Railway 200 celebrations, marking 200 years of Britain’s modern railway. Included on display is the Class 37 Legacy Alstom locomotive D6700, courtesy of the National Railway Museum.

Manufactured in 1959, this was the first-built Class 37 diesel-electric locomotive, and it remains operational. It entered service on 2 December 1960 and was originally allocated to Stratford Depot in East London

The locomotive was built by English Electric at its Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows. D6700 was part of the initial batch ordered as part of British Rail’s modernisation plan.

It is approximately 18.75 m long, 2.71 m wide, 3.89 m high, and 107 t in weight. It has a Co‑Co wheel arrangement, with a top speed of around 90 mph.
