Alstom has inaugurated its first service depot in Shu, Kazakhstan, creating 100 local jobs for skilled workers.

The opening of the depot, which is located in the heart of the Zhambyl region, marks the completion of the first of four service depots planned as part of an Investment Agreement signed between both Alstom and the Government of Kazakhstan in November 2023.

The first facility of its kind to be built in the country since 1988, construction of the depot was made possible via an investment of 5.6 million EUR.

The site is set to provide maintenance for KZ4 and KZ8 electric locomotives currently in operation for national company Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), extending a partnership between the two companies dating back to 2010.

Jerome Boyet, Managing Director of Alstom in Western and Central Asia, said:

This new depot is a symbol of innovation, collaboration, and a testimony to our trust in Kazakhstan’s future as an investor.

The opening of the depot included an on-site ceremony attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to France Gulsara Arystankulova, KTZ management, Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as akimats of Zhambyl region and Shu town.
