The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) has launched its first S700 low-floor light rail vehicles, manufactured by Siemens Mobility.

The first S700 train entered service on the Gold Line on 1 September 2024, while a second began operating on the Green Line on 3 September.

These units form part of SacRT’s initial order for 20 S700 low-floor light rail vehicles.

The new S700 vehicles feature a low-floor design that facilitates smooth boarding. They can each accommodate 187 passengers and offer comfort features such as temperature control and digital station displays.

The new vehicles are expected to provide equitable, efficient, and future-ready transportation for Sacramento residents, thus advancing SacRT’s broader efforts to modernise its network.

Over the next few weeks, SacRT will continue to operate a mixed fleet of low-floor and high-floor trains on the Gold and Green lines while the final testing phase for the new trains is completed.

Siemens will also start production on an additional eight low-floor trains later this year, with delivery expected by late 2025.

In total, SacRT has secured funding for 45 new vehicles, with an option to order up to 76.
