Italy: SSIF Orders Additional Narrow Gauge Stadler Trains

Italian railway operator, Società Subalpina di Imprese Ferroviarie (SSIF) has ordered additional narrow gauge trains from Stadler as part of a framework agreement signed in December 2022.

This purchase is supported by 35.7 million EUR in funding from Italy’s modified National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

It brings the total number of ordered units under the framework agreement to four.

The four-car EMUs will expand SSIF’s cross-border rail fleet for operations on the Domodossola (Italy) to Locarno (Switzerland) section of the Vigezzina-Centovalli railway line.

The four-car electric trains are 64 metres long and each offer 144 seats. They can also be configured into shorter compositions with two or three cars, providing greater flexibility to meet operational requirements.
