The Omaha Streetcar Authority has selected CAF to supply the trams for the city’s new tram network project.

This contract includes the design and construction of the vehicles and related infrastructure, as well as the operation and maintenance of the system.

The 5-kilometre tram network is scheduled to enter service in 2027 and will serve 16 stops, connecting Omaha’s historic Blackstone district with the downtown area.

Initially, CAF has been contracted to supply 6 trams, alongside their corresponding depot parts and tools. This contract is worth approximately 50 million EUR.

The contract also provides an option to increase the number of trams by up to 29 additional units in the future.

The Urbos platform 3-module trams have a 100% low-floor design. They will be equipped to operate using overhead catenary power lines or Onboard Energy Storage Systems (OESS) on sections of the line without a catenary infrastructure.

These will be the first CAF trams with the OESS system to be manufactured for the US.

CAF has been operating in the US since 1998 and has production facilities in Elmira, NY.

The rolling stock manufacturer is also currently working to supply 102 light rail vehicles for Boston’s Green Line and 26 LRVs for Maryland’s Purple Line.
