SBB to Purchase 10 New Trains in the Seetal

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has announced a request for proposals for the supply of ten new single-deck multiple-unit trains for regional services in the Seetal valley.

This tender also includes an option for 10 additional vehicles.

These vehicles are anticipated to enter service in 2029 to replace 15 ageing GTW articulated railcars currently in operation.

The new units will be twice the length of today’s trains, as stricter laws now require the rollout of longer trains to implement the same number of seats.

When purchasing new vehicles, SBB ordinarily relies on a few, standardised vehicle types. However, the unique features of the Seetal line call for a vehicle with a narrower car body than other SBB regional trains, despite the standard gauge.

The vehicle must also have two different entry heights to enable level boarding in accordance with the Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities Act.

Under the current project plan, the contract will be awarded in the 4th quarter of 2024.
