A consortium consisting of Webuild, Ghella and Impresa Pizzarotti has been awarded two Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) contracts to construct additional high-speed rail lines in Italy.

These new contracts have a combined value of more than 3.7 billion EUR.

The first contract is valued at over 2.0 billion EUR. It covers the construction of a section of high-speed railway along the Salerno-Reggio Calabria axis: Lot 1A between Battipaglia and Romagnano.

This contract involves the design and construction of 35 kilometres of rail, on which trains will travel at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour.

It also includes the construction of approximately 14 kilometres of tunnels that will be excavated using a tunnel-boring machine (TBM), as well as more than six kilometres of viaducts and nearly five kilometres of artificial tunnels.

In addition, a juncture will be built at Romagnano to connect the new line with the existing network from Battipaglia to Metaponto and Potenza.

Meanwhile, the second contract is valued at 1.65 billion EUR for the construction of Lot 3 between Lercara and Caltanissetta Xirbi for the railway line between Palermo and Catania.

This Lot covers the development of 47 kilometres of new rail in Sicily, along with the construction of more than 22 kilometres of tunnels.
