A consortium led by Webuild has been chosen to design and construct a rail bypass in Trento, Italy (Circonvallazione di Trento) for Lot 3A of the Brenner Base Tunnel project.

The contract, valued at 934 million EUR (998.9m USD), was awarded by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI).

Lot 3A consists of improving access to the Brenner Base Tunnel from the south by quadrupling the Fortezza-Verona section of the high-speed Munich-Verona corridor.

It has been identified as a strategic project for the development of sustainable mobility in Italy under the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience.

The consortium, which consists of Webuild (55% including subsidiary SELI), Ghella (35%) and Collini (10%), has been tasked with designing and constructing 13 kilometres of line, which includes a 10.6km-long tunnel.

Four tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) will be deployed to excavate the tunnel, with two working at each end.

The rate of excavation is to reach between 15 and 20 metres a day.

This latest contract raises Webuild’s involvement in the Brenner Base Tunnel even further, as the group is also working on the Mules 2-3 lot, the Isarco River underpass in Italy and Lot H41 Gola del Sil-Pfons in Austria.

It has already completed Lot Tulfes-Pfons in Austria while working on the Fortezza-Ponte Gardena access line in Italy – also part of the Munich-Verona corridor.
