Fire at London Bridge station

London Bridge station was closed for a time this morning after a fire broke out in a railway arch.

More than 70 firefighters went to the scene, and London Fire Brigade said the ‘entire arch’ was ablaze, although the fire is now under control.

The fire in Union Street, Southwark, broke out underneath the tracks, and four lines above were closed. No injuries have been reported, and it is not yet known what started the fire.

Witnesses described thick black smoke, which was first reported by a train driver just after 09.20. Nearby buildings have been evacuated, and Jubilee Line services through the station were also suspended for a while.

Chris Denham of Network Rail said: ‘No trains are currently able to run between London Bridge and Blackfriars/Waterloo East or Charing Cross, with services diverted or cancelled.

‘Once the fire is extinguished we will inspect the arches for any damage and make sure it is safe to run trains before reopening the line.’

National Rail said the lines affected have now been reopened, but delays are expected on Southeastern and Southern services in the area until about 15.00.
