Network Rail Announces CP6 Rail Haulage and Seasonal Services Contracts

Network Rail has awarded rail haulage and seasonal services contracts for Control Period 6 worth £800 million. 

The rail haulage contracts include aspects such as network, bulk ballast and possession engineering trains (Lot 1). The companies who have won these contracts are:

The companies who won the contracts to run operations at Network Rail’s local distribution centres (Lot 2) are:

Seasonal Services Contracts

The seasonal services works include tasks such as weed spray and autumn / winter multipurpose services. The companies who won these contracts (Lot 3 and Lot 4) are:

  • DB Cargo UK
  • Balfour Beatty

Rail head treatment train autumn services (Lot 5) meanwhile will be performed by:

  • DB Cargo UK
  • Direct Rail Services
  • Colas Rail UK
  • GB Railfreight
  • Freightliner

The company operating the snow and ice treatment trains (Lot 6) is:

  • GB Railfreight

Finally, the company operating the winter development train (Lot 7) and snow ploughs, route proving and ice breaking for winter treatment (Lot 8) is:

  • Direct Rail Services

Rob Morton, director of supply chain operations, Network Rail, said:

“These contracts demonstrate the commercially creative approach Network Rail’s supply chain now adopts. We have applied a more collaborative and forward-thinking style to our sourcing than previously, which aligns not only our goals, but those of our supply partners.

“The new contracts provide us with sufficient flexibility to direct our spend to those suppliers who deliver the best service. We have also ensured the deals have appropriate mutual benefit to maximise their longevity and chance of delivering successfully.”
