The first phase of the new Mid Cornwall Metro has officially begun operation, with local business leaders welcoming the enhanced train service between Newquay and Par.

Starting today (18 May 2026), trains will begin running hourly between the two locations, more than doubling the previous timetable and providing the most frequent service on the line for over 60 years.

The full Mid Cornwall Metro service is currently scheduled to begin next year, and will introduce direct trains Newquay to Falmouth via Par, St Austell and Truro.

Valued at 57 million GBP; the project was funded by the UK Government and Cornwall Council, and has been enabled by a number of extensive upgrades carried out by Network Rail along the Newquay to Par line.

Work included restoration of a second platform at Newquay station, the building of a new passing loop at Goss Moor allowing trains to run in both directions concurrently, the installation of digital signalling, track replacement near St Blazey, and a major refurbishment of the 153-year-old Ponts Mill viaduct.

Chris Fuoco, Network Rail’s Western Route Programme Director for Devon and Cornwall, said:

We’re thrilled to have reached this important milestone in delivering Mid Cornwall Metro.

The upgrades we’ve completed mean we can run more frequent and more reliable services, helping to better connect communities and support local economic growth.
