The new service links King Abdulaziz Port, King Fahd Industrial Port and Jubail Commercial Port with Al-Haditha Port through the national railway network. The route is also designed to support movements in the opposite direction, allowing goods to return to ports using the same network. The route extends for more than 1,700 kilometres and is expected to reduce transit times compared with existing land freight options. Each train has the capacity to carry more than 400 standard containers. The corridor is intended to improve the efficiency and reliability of freight transport, supporting export and re-export activity. Shifting cargo from road to rail may also reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles on highways, with potential effects on road maintenance, safety and emissions. The development forms part of wider efforts to strengthen logistics infrastructure and integrate supply chains across the region through rail-based transport.
