The Ontario government has started construction on the Bowmanville Extension of GO Transit, a project that will extend the Lakeshore East line by nearly 19 kilometres into Durham Region.

The extension is expected to provide regular, two-way service throughout the day, connecting communities from Oshawa to Bowmanville and linking residents to housing and local employment centres.

The project includes the construction of four new stations at Thornton’s Corners East, Ritson Road, Courtice, and Bowmanville. Once operational, it is anticipated that the extension will support around 17,000 trips per day and nearly five million boardings annually by 2041. Commuters will be able to travel every half hour during peak periods, with less frequent service during off-peak times and weekends.

Early work on the project began in spring 2025 and included tree clearing, geotechnical surveys, and the installation of a new watermain in Oshawa. Current construction focuses on modifying bridges, relocating utilities, and upgrading the Durham College Oshawa GO Station and the adjacent VIA Rail facilities.

The Bowmanville Extension will transform travel across Durham Region, bringing fast, reliable and affordable GO train service to residents from Oshawa to Bowmanville and connecting thousands of Ontarians to housing and good-paying jobs.

The extension forms part of a broader provincial investment in transit, which also includes the Kitchener GO Extension and the recently opened Confederation GO Station in Hamilton. Ontario has committed 70 billion CAD to improve access to public transit across the province, including expanding two-way, all-day GO service on major routes.
