Sydney Metro has celebrated the completion of the first trip along the entire length of the M1 Metro North West & Bankstown Line from Tallawong to Bankstown.

The inaugural journey saw a Metro train stop at all 31 stations on the 66-kilometre route, hitting speeds of 100 km/h on the new section of track.

The Southwest extension of the M1 is set to open in the second half of 2026, with over 500 of the required 9,000 testing hours now having been completed since high speed tests began in November.

Over 70 key integration tests will be completed during this phase, all of which will aim to verify the performance, functionality and safety of both the trains and new infrastructure.

The final conversion period will see crews complete work to integrate the Southwest Metro with the existing metro line, a process which will require a series of full and partial line closures of the M1.

Metro services will not run on the weekends of 17–18 and 24–25 January to allow critical works to take place, with a series of additional closures planned for the coming months.
