ÖBB Rail Cargo Launches New European TransFER Services

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has announced the launch of two brand-new TransFER services for wagonloads between Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands, as well as an expansion of its intermodal services with new routes to Romania.

The new TransFER Duisburg–Rotterdam and TransFER Salzburg–Offenbach services will expand the operator’s network for wagonloads and containers.

With a similar operation pattern to passenger trains, TransFER services transport goods with fixed schedules and predefined stops. Freight customers utilise the services with either conventional freight wagons or intermodal units, and can book services flexibly.

Currently, there are over 60 such connections between a number of economic centres in Europe and Asia. The service also offers pre- and post-carriage by truck, forwarding options and professional customs clearance.

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group Board Member Christoph Grasl said:

The further development of our TransFER connections demonstrates how consistently we align our services with the needs of our customers. With the new direct and predictable connections, we are improving the accessibility of key logistics hubs and creating attractive conditions for switching to rail.

The new TransFER Duisburg–Rotterdam service initially connects the Rheinkamp logistics hub near Duisburg with the Port of Rotterdam (Waalhaven, Europoort, Botlek, Pernis, and Maasvlakte terminals) with three round trips per week, whilst the new nonstop connection between Austria and Germany directly connects the central rail hub of Salzburg with Offenbach with two round trips weekly.

Expanding its intermodal services; ÖBB Rail Cargo’s current TransFER service between Genk and Curtici will become the TransFER Liège–Curtici and begin operating seven weekly round trips from Liège. Simultaneously; RCG is introducing a new connection for continental freight flows with the TransFER Duisburg–Curtici service, offering three round trips per week.
