Mark Robinson has officially been appointed as Chief Information Officer (CIO) of DfT Operator (DFTO) – the government body responsible for bringing all privately-owned train operators into public ownership in Great Britain.

Robinson will handle the lead of DFTO’s digital, data and cybersecurity strategy, as well as provide a strategic overview across all train operators in public ownership.

Following time as director of technology at the Ministry of Justice; Robinson will look to ensure that the new, publicly owned network is sufficiently supported by forward-looking technologies, securing a number of systems ahead of the creation of Great British Railways (GBR).

Robinson has also held senior roles at Cubic Corporation and Red Bee Media.

I’m excited to have joined DFTO at such a transformative time for the rail industry.

My focus will be on creating a secure, data-driven and future-ready technology environment that supports the public ownership programme as the journey towards Great British Railway accelerates in 2026.

Thus far; six train operators have come under public ownership: c2c, Greater Anglia, LNER, Northern, Southeastern, South Western Railway and TransPennine Express; with West Midlands Trains set to join the DFTO from Sunday 01 February.
