A consortium led by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) has been awarded a comprehensive project contract for Lot 2 of the new Naples Metro Line 10, the city’s first fully automated metro line.

The contract has been awarded by Ente Autonomo Volturno (EAV), the public transport operator for Italy’s Campania region.

The CAF-led temporary consortium (RTI) also includes AET S.r.l., Francesco Ventura Costruzioni Ferroviarie S.r.l., Mer Mec STE S.r.l. and Leonardo S.p.A. The overall value of the contract, including optional elements, could exceed 630 million EUR. The initial base stage is valued at 259 million EUR.

Lot 2 covers the design and implementation of a fully automated metro system. The scope includes CBTC/ATO Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) signalling, electrical substations, overhead catenary, data networks, telecommunications, platform screen doors and the operational control centre. The contract also includes the supply of a new fleet of fully automated trains, workshop equipment for the new depots and maintenance services.

The trains will be based on CAF’s INNEO platform and will consist of three high-capacity cars. According to the company, the units will feature a modern interior and exterior layout designed for automated operation.

The project represents CAF’s first involvement in a fully automated metro operation. The system will use CAF’s OPTIO signalling technology to enable GoA4 operation, under which trains are operated entirely by the control system without a driver or onboard staff. At this level of automation, the system manages all core functions, including driving, stopping, door operation, emergency responses and depot movements.

Naples Metro Line 10, also known as the Afragola–Napoli LAN Line, will extend for around 12 kilometres. It is intended to link the Afragola high-speed rail station with the wider Naples metropolitan network, improving integration with the national rail system. The project forms part of the city’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan.
