The Škoda Group has presented its very first fully modernised M31 tram for Västtrafik in Gothenburg.

The vehicles have completed all required certification and operating tests and undergone their first passenger services in a new milestone of an ongoing fleet modernisation programme.

Göteborgs Spårvägar has begun to introduce the trams into regular service, with a set of additional units now undergoing refurbishment at Škoda’s production site in Ostrava.

Martin Bednarz, Production Site Director at Škoda Group, said:

Seeing the first modernised M31 tram here in Gothenburg ready for service is a proud moment for our teams. Today marks an important milestone for public transport in Gothenburg. With the first modernised M31 tram, we are delivering higher comfort, extended lifespan, and greater reliability for passengers across the city.

The contract includes the modernisation of 79 M31 trams first manufactured in the 1980s, with the expected lifespan of the vehicles set to be extended by a minimum of 15 years upon completion.

Refurbishment details include a fully modernised exterior and interior, refreshed design, new seat coverings, enhanced lighting, upgraded heating and new air-condition systems.

A number of major technical systems have also received upgrades, including a new electro-hydraulic braking system and new door drives replacing old pneumatic units, as well as a redesigned driver’s cab.

The refreshed design, improved comfort and a modern driver’s cab mean these beloved trams can keep serving the city for many years to come. It’s a boost for both our passengers and the tram drivers
