Škoda Group has been awarded a tender to supply a fleet of new rail vehicles for operation on the Saltsjöbanan light suburban railway, which runs from Stockholm to Saltsjöbaden in the municipality of Nacka.

Operated by Stockholm carrier Storstockholms Lokaltrafik; the 230 million EUR contract is based on an order of up to 31 vehicles, including 16 two-car units and an option for a further 15.

The vehicles will be developed across Škoda’s manufacturing centres in Finland, with the company also set to to provide a supply of spare parts and driver training.

Each of the new rail vehicles will consist of a two-car unit at a length of 36 metres and feature a DC power supply of 750/1500 V, all with traction bogies. As a whole; each two-car unit will be capable of carrying roughly 250 passengers with 94 seats available onboard.

During peak hours, the operator will be able to combine units into sets of up to three cars.

This is another in a series of strategic projects that strengthen our position in the Nordic region, where we are entering a new market for rolling stock.

We are pleased that the delivery of these vehicles to the customer Stockholm Region will make daily commuting between the Swedish capital and its surroundings more modern and comfortable for the residents of Stockholm.

The first vehicles are expected to be delivered in 2029, before entering official operation at the turn of 2029 & 2030.
