Austria: New Passenger Bridge Installed at Sigmundsherberg Station

Construction work on the modernisation of the Franz Josef Railway has reached a new milestone with the installation of a new passenger bridge at Sigmundsherberg station.

The new bridge, which weighs 103 tonnes and measures 58-metres in length, was lifted into place on 25 October via the use of two cranes.

Installed in ten hours; the passenger bridge will provide passengers with weather-protected, barrier-free access to station platforms and consists of a total of 3,273 prefabricated components.

Construction at Sigmundsherberg station began in May 2024 and has included the installation of an electronic interlocking system. Works have, largely, been carried out whilst train services continued unaltered.

Additional renovations at the station include an extension of the existing central platform 2/3 to 330 metres, as well as the implementation of dynamic passenger information displays.

Works at the station are expected to be completed by Easter 2026 following 53 million EUR worth of investment into the station’s modernisation project.
