US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy made this announcement alongside the launch of Amtrak’s NextGen Acela fleet. Duffy stated that the plan is part of the administration’s broader initiative to improve travel and make Washington D.C. safe and beautiful. Washington Union Station © Amtrak The historic Union Station building has been owned by the US DOT since the 1980s. However, its control over the building has reduced over time under several agreements. Duffy has now stated that strong federal leadership is required to ensure its preservation and restoration. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said: With these new Acela trainsets, Amtrak will provide more reliable service and lower prices for the American people – all while increasing the organisation’s profitability. But we’re not stopping there. Instead of being a point of pride, Washington’s Union Station has fallen into disrepair. By reclaiming station management, we will help make this city safe and beautiful at a fraction of the cost. In 2024, a US District Court ruling granted Amtrak control over the management and operations of the station after a lawsuit initiated by Amtrak in April 2022.
