The Sydney Metro West project has reached a new milestone with the completion of the excavation process of the new Hunter Street metro station cavern.

The excavation, which has been in process for the last 20 months and called for a team of 57 workers, has resulted in a tunnel that measures in at 180-metres long, 28 metres in width and 20 metres in height.

To build the station cavern, one roadheader and a team of 57 workers removed more than 240,000 tonnes of material, enough to fill more than 290 Olympic size swimming pools

Hunter Street station is set to serve as the Sydney Metro West line’s final stop upon its opening in 2032, and is predicted to be the busiest along the network.

The new 24-kilometre line will double capacity between Greater Parramatta and Sydney’s Central Business District.
