Two new metro networks are being developed in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, aiming to improve public transport in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada as fast-growing metropolitan areas.

SYSTRA India has been appointed to update the Comprehensive Mobility Plans (CMPs) for both cities. These plans, originally prepared in 2019, form the basis for current feasibility studies. They are required to obtain central government approval and funding for the projects.

The proposed Visakhapatnam metro will span 46 kilometres across three lines. In Vijayawada, the planned metro network will cover 38 kilometres over two lines. Both systems are intended to offer reliable, safe, and efficient transport options to support a shift from private to public modes of travel.

The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (APMRCL), a state-owned body, is overseeing the projects. The initiative is part of wider efforts to address urban congestion and enhance mobility in the region.
