The Community of Madrid has presented the design for new automated Metro trains set to operate on Line 6 by 2027.

Earlier this week, Regional Minister of Housing, Transport, and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo announced that the city is investing 450 million EUR in 40 new units.

These vehicles will enhance capacity, speed, accessibility, and energy efficiency across the public transport network.

The new trains are being manufactured by CAF at its facilities in Zaragoza and Beasain. They will increase passenger capacity by up to 17%—serving 1,385 passengers per train. Each train will feature six cars with interconnecting corridors and enhanced accessibility, including higher colour contrast and hearing loop systems to aid passengers with hearing aids.

With the removal of driver cabs and expanded train width, the new design boosts transit speed by 33%, allowing for a two-minute train frequency and reduced waiting times.

Energy efficiency will also be improved by 20% compared to current trains on Line 6.

This initiative will prepare Madrid’s Metro network for future expansions, including the extension of Line 11 to Conde de Casal.

A second phase of the project, with an estimated investment of 500 million EUR, will involve acquiring an additional 40 units for Line 1 between Pinar de Chamartín and Valdecarros.
