Network Rail Commences Upgrade Work at Luton Station

Network Rail has commenced construction work on delivering improvements and upgrades that will enhance the passenger experience at Luton station.

This programme will replace the station canopies on platforms 1 and 2 and will install a new bridge and three lifts to improve the station’s accessibility.

The new canopies will replace the existing, decades-old installations at the station, which have started to leak due to storm damage. To complete this work, scaffolding will be put up on platforms 1 and 2 over the next seven weeks.

Both platforms are expected to remain open throughout this project, with the work scheduled to be completed in Spring 2024.

In addition, progress on delivering accessibility improvements through the station’s Access for All scheme is expected to start on-site in Spring 2024.

This will include the construction of a new, accessible bridge with three lifts. This infrastructure is expected to be completed in spring 2025.

Gary Walsh, Route Director for Network Rail in the East Midlands, said:

“I know how strongly the community who use Luton station feel about these improvements and am pleased they will be able to see progress on site very soon. Work to the canopies and the subsequent work to make the station more accessible is essential to make Luton station better for all those who use it.”
