28 April: news in brief

Minute of silence for workers who died on duty

NETWORK RAIL and railway operators are pausing for one minute at 11.00 today, to commemorate those who have lost their lives at work, or from diseases or injuries related to their employment. The pause will mark International Workers’ Memorial Day, and it is particularly appropriate this year, considering the employees who have lost their lives in recent weeks to Covid 19. GWR human resources director Ruth Busby said: ‘We are being relied upon to continue to help key workers in other sectors get to work so they can provide services critical to the day-to-day running of the country. In doing so, it is right that we take time to reflect and to pay tribute to those who have died during the present pandemic, and also all those who have given their lives at work.’
