SURPLUS 16-ton mineral wagons from the Great Central Railway’s ‘Windcutter’ fleet have been given a new home at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway (P&BR).

Six of the ex-BR wagons, which are not required for the GCR’s demonstration rake, arrived in South Wales on January 3, courtesy of the David Clarke Railway Trust. 

The wagons have been placed on an initial 10-year loan with the P&BR, with a subsequent rolling five-year extension after that. In return, the P&BR will maintain, operate and complete the restoration of the wagons as required.

Alex Hinshelwood, the P&BR’s traffic manager, said: “We are very grateful to the David Clarke Railway Trust in giving us this opportunity to bring some of these iconic railway wagons back to South Wales, a place where they could once be found in their thousands.
