Alstom Transport has won a second contract on line 15 of the Shanghai Metro. In partnership with two of its joint-ventures, Shanghai Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment Co. Ltd and Alstom Yongji Electric Equipment Co., Alstom will provide the electrical and traction systems, including motors, auxiliary converters and the train control monitoring system (TCMS), for 324 metro cars on the driverless line. The contract is worth 58 million euros for the companies.

Alstom and its affiliates will install the upgraded OptONIX traction system, which was specifically designed for Chinese networks, in the cars. The upgraded system, which is 98% recyclable, will increase capacity for electrical braking.

Line 15 is a high-capacity north-south route in the western part of the city. Services on the line are expected to start in 2020. In May 2018, Alstom and its other Shanghai-based joint venture, CASCO Signal Ltd, won a contract to provide the Urbalis signalling solution for the line.

Since winning its first Chinese contract in 1999 Alstom has supplied 1,222 metropolis metro cars for seven metro lines in Shanghai. Line 10 transports one of the highest numbers of daily passengers of all driverless metro lines worldwide. In partnership with CASCO Alstom has supplied signalling systems for eight metro lines in the city.
