YOUR comments about the spread of buddleia along the rail network, and the reflection on ‘poor housekeeping’ by Network Rail, leads me to comment on the disgraceful appearance of the railways as they thread their way through the conurbations, in particular.

The rail corridors through Glasgow are thick with litter and debris, a lot flung off overbridges and over back garden fences! In many ways I sympathise with NR in trying to tackle the problem, but yet I never see any significant attempt at clearing it.It is a poor ‘advert’ for my city, and I’ve written to the council hoping they might share my views and pressure NR to do something.

Abandoned engineering materials is another source of dismay…valued in the tens of millions?

Perhaps NR cannot get the possessions required to both clear the rubbish and recover what must be valuable resources

Several readers have voiced similar concerns. The attached picture at Newcastle Central from Trevor Hall shows how platforms are now being invaded. It is the right time to resurrect ‘Weedwatch’, where readers send in images of out-of-control vegetation on the network. Contributions are invited and the best one (or should that be worst?) will be published each month – Ed.
