RENFE has announced plans to invest €650m to improve passenger comfort, upgrade stations and improve accessibility, more than double the €305m it is expected to invest in 2018.

The biggest investment will be in rolling stock, including the purchase of new trains, increasing the capacity of current stock, equipment improvement, multiple-unit renovations, and improvements in accessibility to medium-distance trains, series 446 and 447 commuter trains, Altaria and Alvia high speed trains and series 3800 units. The total investment will be worth €541.8m, 120% more than the €245.6m budgeted for 2018.

Traffic safety will be allocated €56.2m, a 137% increase compared with €23.7m this year. €40.1m will be invested in stations managed by Renfe Operadora, 40% more than the €28.6m in the 2018 budget, with a focus on improving the facilities and services at commuter stations.
