Irish Rail DMU to be fitted with new transmissions

IRISH Rail (IE) has signed a contract with Rolls-Royce to rebuild three MTU PowerPacks on a Hyundai Rotem 22000 class DMU with new EcoWorld transmissions from ZF to improve more efficiency and reduce noise emissions.
The DMU, which operates inter-city services across Ireland, will benefit from a 19% reduction in both fuel and CO2 emissions, Rolls-Royce says.
MTU PowerPacks are compact drive system packages that incorporate the engine and transmission with the components required for rail traction including the cooling system and exhaust aftertreatment.

The fleet of 63 22000 class trains entered service between 2007 and 2011. The trains are equipped with MTU 6H 1800 R83 engines and Voith T 312 R transmissions.
